Indication: Lactulose is prescribed for the treatment of constipation and hepatic encephalopathy.
Class: It belongs to the class of medications known as osmotic laxatives.
Mechanism of Action: Lactulose works by drawing water into the colon, softening stools, and increasing bowel movements. In hepatic encephalopathy, it reduces blood ammonia levels by promoting the conversion of ammonia to ammonium ions in the colon, which are then excreted in the feces.
Formulation: Available in oral solution and syrup forms for oral administration.
